Ingredients
2 cups Flour
2 tablespoons Baking Powder
1 pinch Salt
1 oz Margarine
1 Egg
4-5 tablespoons Milk
Oil for frying
Method
Sift flour, baking powder and salt into bowl. Rub in margarine with fingertips, then add well-beaten egg and sufficient milk to form a dough. Roll out into a rectangle, 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 3 inch x 1 inch strips. Slit each strip lengthwise into 3, leaving top intact. Plait each strip, pinching ends together. Heat oil and fry a few at a time until golden. Drain and immediately dip into cold syrup. Lift out and put on cake rack. Store in an airtight tin, separating layers with aluminium foil.
Syrup:
8 oz sugar
1/4 pint water
3 inch cinnamon stick.
Put all ingredients into shallow pan and stir over gentle heat until sugar dissolves. Boil rapidly 1 minute. Cool.
